What is BMI Calculator?

The BMI calculator is a tool used as a trustworthy indicator of a person's body weight as per their height. In other words, you can use this tool to determine your body mass index in correspondence with your height and weight. Also, our body mass index calculator supports both "US/UK Unit" and "Metric Unit". So, you can enter the height in inches or centimeters and weight in pounds or kilograms.

How to Use the BMI Calculator?

  1. Firstly, select the type of unit in which you want to enter height and weight. There are two unit options. US/UK Unit and Matric Unit.
  2. After that, enter your height and weight. If you select US/UK unit, enter the height in feet and inches and weight in pounds. If you select Metric unit, enter the height in centimeters and weight in kilograms.
  3. Lastly, press the Calculate button. As a result, you will get an accurate BMI including the BMI category and the health risk associated with that category.
  4. To clear the input and output fields, use the Reset button.

What is BMI?

BMI (Body Mass Index) measures the leanness or thinness of a person based on their height and weight. It serves as an indicator of if the person has a healthy body weight according to their height. Also, it's used to determine whether a person is underweight, normal, overweight, obese, or severely obese depending on the range in which the BMI value lies.

BMI Categories

The BMI ranges can vary based on various factors. Such as region, age, gender, etc. Following are the different BMI categories that our BMI calculator follows along with the health risks associated with each category.

BMI Category BMI Range (kg/m2) Health Risk
Underweight 18.5 and below Malnutrition Risk
Normal weight 18.5 - 24.9 Low Risk
Overweight 25 - 29.9 Enchanced Risk
Moderately Obese 30 - 34.9 Medium Risk
Severely Obese 35 - 39.9 High Risk
Very Severely Obese 40 and above Very high Risk

Today, almost everyone is health-conscious. Everyone wants to know the category of their weight. Whether they are underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. Also, BMI helps to manage your health. So, if you want to determine your BMI category or want to check your body mass index, use our body mass index calculator.

BMI Formula

There are two different formulas to calculate BMI.

If mass in pounds (lbs) and height in inches (in):

BMI(kg/m2) =
mass(lb)
height2(in)
  × 703

If mass in kilograms (kg) and height in meters (m):

BMI(kg/m2) =
mass(kg)
height2(m)

How to Calculate the Body Mass Index?

As we discussed before, there are two BMI formulas based on the unit to calculate the body mass index. Let's understand both with examples.

1. For US/UK Unit

In this method, we will take the height in inches and weight in pounds. Now follow the steps below.

  1. If the height is in feet then firstly convert it into inches. You can simply multiply the feet value by 12 to get inches. For Example, 5 feet = 5 × 12 = 60 inches.
  2. Keep the weight in pounds (lbs).
  3. Now place the value in the formula and do the simple math calculation.
  4. Lastly, multiply the resultant value by 703 to get your BMI.

Let's take an example to understand the above steps.

Example:

Suppose, Height = 5 feet and 11 inches = (5 × 12) + 11 = 71 inches
Weight = 155 pounds (lbs).

Let's place the above values in the BMI formula.

BMI =
weight(lb)
height2(inches)
  × 703
BMI =
155
(71)2
  × 703
BMI = 21. 62

2. For Metric Unit

In this method, we will take the height in meters and the weight in kilograms. Now follow the instructions below.

  1. Firstly, convert the height into meters. If it's in centimeters, you can simply divide the centimeter value by 100. For Example, 1000 cm = 1000/100 = 10 m
  2. Keep the weight in kilograms.
  3. Place the height and weight value in the formula and do the math calculation.

Let's take an example.

Example:

Calculate the BMI for, Height = 180 cm = 180/100 = 1.8 m
Weight = 75 kg

BMI =
weight(kg)
height2(m)
BMI =
75
(1.8)2
  = 23.15

However, if you do not wish to calculate BMI manually, you can use our BMI calculator to make this process easy, fast, and more accurate.
